Saint George's Task
It was a long time since we saw the sun for the last time, almost two hundred
days at least. Since the dragons have arrived to our planet we couldn’t go
outside more than a few minutes, and the ash has covered the whole sky. We had
to build underground campsites and tunnels to connect each one.
That day was my guard duty turn. I
thought that the guard duty was a trifle, we didn’t have the need to look after the
outsides, if we hadn’t gone out anything bad had happened, but we went out like every
patrol. Nothing had ever happened, some solitary dragons who tried to attack us
at the most, nothing difficult if you are in group and you carry a gun. Nothing
had ever happened until that day.
Up to our camp the rumor
came from the West Camp. They said that there was a woman who had been
living the last month in one of the few towers that remained standing in our
devastated world. Eating the dead bodies of the people who died when dragons
arrived. We met in the obligation to act. We took our guns and our gas masks;
the ash in the "air" was lethal. If you breathed it you died in minutes. The
girl was at almost 10km, not much. It was not difficult to find her, as soon as
she heard us she ran to us, looking for help. The difficulty was the letting out; the first
dragons arrived when we were still in, the other arrived when we were already out,
dozens of them were arriving. Our race to the survival had started. My partners
started firing, but my mission was to protect the girl to return to our
campsite alive. One of the dragons had crossed in front of us, really close. I
took my knife which I carried in my waist as a reflex reaction and I cut a
piece of flesh. The blood started to flow from its neck, but another hit me, I fell of the car where we get in to go "home". I raised in pain but I saw another dragon bringing closer and closer, I loaded my gun and I shooted it until he died. This way I shooted two beasts more. On having seen their
partners fall from the sky, the remaining dragons ran away.
We followed our way to arrive at the campsite.Just on the side of the
north entry of our camp, where we arrived, just on the left of the gate, a
rose. A red rose emerged from the sterile ground.
